Stig Lundqvist (1925 - 2000)

Stig Lundqvist, an outstanding Swedish scientist, received his PhD from Uppsala University in
1955.
He joined Chalmers University in Göteborg as a professor in the Department of Physics in 1961.
In 1971 he was appointed to the Nobel Committee in Physics and in 1980 became the Committee's
Chairman.
Professor Lundqvist's involvement with ICTP began in 1967. He was a driving force behind the
creation of the Condensed Matter Programme. He served as director of many colleges and workshops.
In 1985 he launched ICTP's Adriatico Research Conferences, which drew some of the world's
foremost researchers in condensed matter physics and related areas to ICTP.
Professor Lundqvist was chairperson of the ICTP Scientific Council from 1983 to 1992. The ICTP
Prize was awarded in his honour in 1999.
This lecture hall was dedicated to the memory of Professor Lundqvist in July 2000
