    Telephone instructions

In order to facilitate the use of the ICTP's telephone system and to ensure quick and realiable telephone services please observe the following points:

    INTERNAL CALLS (WITHIN THE ICTP)

Listen for the dial tone which is a continuous buzz, then dial the required extension. A long slow buzz indicates the "ringing" signal; a series of short buzzes indicates that the line is busy.

CALLS AMONG BUILDINGS (LB, EFB, AGH & GGH)

Just dial the extension numbers indicated in the ICTP's Telephone Directory. If the extension number is unknown please call 90 (MB), 92 (AGH) or 93 (GGH)for the switchboard.

    OUTGOING LOCAL CALLS

Listen for the dial tone, dial 0 for the city line. Calls within the Trieste telephone area (040) can be dialled direct from most office extensions on the ICTP premises. Staff members are asked to co-operate by limiting the number and duration of calls.

    OFFICIAL LONG-DISTANCE CALLS

Listen for the dial tone, then dial 90 (from within LB, EFB & GGH) or 92 (from within AGH) for the switchboard, give your name and your extension number and ask the operator for the number desired. Please remain at the extension from which the call has been placed.

    PRIVATE LONG-DISTANCE CALLS

The switchboard operators 90 (LB, EFB & GGH) or 92 (AGH) will be pleased to help you. However, all the buildings have been equipped with coin and card operated public telephones which should be used. Private calls through the operator should be settled immediately at the Reception desks.

    TRANSFER OF EXTERNAL CALLS

External incoming or outgoing calls may be transferred to another extension by pressing R on the "Sirio" type telephone sets, then dial the extension to which the call is being transferred, wait for the reply and replace the receiver. If there is no reply, press 2 to re-establish the connection. If you want to transfer the call to the switchboard press R90 (LB) or R92 (AGH) then wait for the reply and replace the receiver.
