FLASHBACK

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of ICTP, Highlights periodically includes a description of a seminal event in the Centre's history: 15 July - 25 August 1962 -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) holds an International Seminar on Theoretical Physics at the Scuderie, which were once the stables for Miramare Castle in Trieste. The event comes four months after the Italian government nominates Trieste as its candidate to serve as the permanent host of the proposed international centre for theoretical physics. Paolo Budinich persuades IAEA to hold the seminar in Trieste as a 'test case' to see how well Trieste is able to handle such events. The seminar, which is directed by Abdus Salam, includes two other future Nobel Laureates--Eugene P. Wigner and Julian Schwinger. Stanley Mandelstam and Tullio Regge, two future ICTP Dirac medallists, are also in attendance.
