PRIMO ROVIS PRIZE


Chinese-born science journalist Zhao Zhizhen was awarded the 1999 Primo Rovis International Prize for his contributions to public understanding of science and technology in China. The award ceremony took place on 18 December in the ICTP Main Lecture Hall. Cheng Wendong, China's Ambassador to Italy, was in attendance. The event marked the 20th anniversary of the Fondazione Trieste per il progresso e la libertà delle scienze (Trieste Foundation for the Progress and Freedom of Sciences). Zhao is considered a pioneer in science popularization in China. He is president of the Wuhan TV Station, chief director of the Wuhan Association of Popular Science Writers and deputy chief director of the Society for Science Journalism in China. The Primo Rovis Prize, which is endowed by a grant from Trieste entrepreneur Primo Rovis, carries a US$20,000 cash award.
